A
facebook status to show you care ?
By Alex Mustier
Here we are, at the end of the first
term; just a little longer to go until the holidays and amidst our pressing
worries about the outcome of our Conseil, an incredible phenomenon has taken
our virtual lives by storm: the death of Nelson Mandela (1918-2013). RIP.
Although it is true that Mandela had a
prominent role in ensuring the end of apartheid in South Africa, did that
affect any of us at the Lycée?
Not directly. This may be a harsh
statement, but as a wave of Facebook statuses saluting the man himself
overwhelmed all of us last Thursday night, I wondered if this was a homage to a
great man or instead a way to show our friends that we to believe in what he
stood for.
While I was touched by how many of our
school’s students were pro-Mandela, I wasn’t entirely sure about how mere
Facebook updates would pursue his legacy in the future. Undoubtedly, Mandela
will remain a symbol of human endurance and hope. We for one need to learn from
his example, apply it in our own lives, and remain open to the ideas and
example of other lesser known great men and women who are trying to change our
world for the better.
